THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN OVER THE HILL GANG

The Rocky Mountain Over the Hill Gang (RMOTHG), a section of the Denver Group of the Colorado Mountain Club (CMC), is a group of more than 600 people over 50 who enjoy getting out to enjoy the glory of the Colorado landscape.  There are regular biking, cross-country skiing, hiking, and snowshoe excursions.  Run principally on weekdays, they go from the relatively easy to the quite challenging, and from Denver and the foothills to the high country: all emphasize taking in the remarkable scenery and enjoying each other’s company.   And almost all are followed by a stop to enjoy refreshments.

In addition to outdoor adventures, there are monthly cultural/social events and an annual meeting.  There is also a summer picnic, summer camping trip, and holiday party at the end of the year.  One need not participate in outdoor trips to attend them. A monthly email newsletter is the key to learning about all upcoming RMOTHG activities.  Past newsletters can be found at www.rmothg.org/UploadedUserFiles/nlarchive.aspx.

Members pay yearly CMC, Denver Group, and RMOTHG dues.  Once a member, a RMOTHG’er can register with any or all of the hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing email lists to receive announcements of the trips each week.  They then register for the ones they want to participate in on the CMC website (www.cmc.org).  Members can also register for CMC trips there.

All trips are organized and led by volunteers who have taken classes at CMC to qualify to become leaders. CMC offers a multitude of classes, including leadership, wilderness first aid, wilderness trekking school, hiking, climbing, mountaineering, photography, fly fishing, and much more.

The RMOTHG calendar:

-Biking trips are held weekly from the first Friday in May through the last Friday in September, with spontaneous rides during March, April, October, and November as weather permits.  Members sign up to receive email notices at bicycling.list@rmothg.org.

-Cross-country skiing trips run through the winter, snowfall and leader availability permitting.  Trips are announced in the newsletter.

-Hiking trips are scheduled weekly from May to October, often with two, three, or four of varying length available each week.  To get on the list of announcements, members sign up at hiking.list@rmothg.org.  The weather dictates whether hiking or snowshoeing trips are offered in April and November.

-Snowshoeing outings run from December to March, snowfall permitting.  Those interested sign up to receive email announcements at snowshoe.list@rmothg.org.

The RMOTHG offers a chance to partake in group outdoor activities, and enjoy them with others who do as well.
